How Italy's state-owned rail giant expanded its reach across the European continent
In short: Established in 2000 to meet European Union deregulation mandates, Trenitalia has evolved from a national operator into a major player in international rail. From high-speed services in Spain to cross-border routes in France and the United Kingdom, the company now defines modern European rail travel through its diverse fleet.
Trenitalia was formed on 1 June 2000 as a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, a move driven by the European Commission's 1991 directive requiring the separation of rail infrastructure management from transport operations. While the company operates as a commercial entity, it remains wholly owned by the Italian government. Its network is vast, encompassing regional services subsidized by local governments and a high-speed portfolio that includes the Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Frecciabianca brands. These services are supported by a sophisticated infrastructure managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, which began rolling out high-speed tracks in 2008.
The company's international footprint has grown significantly through strategic acquisitions and partnerships. In Spain, Trenitalia participates in the ILSA consortium, operating high-speed Iryo services that launched in January 2022. In France, the company rebranded its Thello subsidiary to Trenitalia France in October 2021, launching direct high-speed connections between Paris and Milan. Its influence also reached the United Kingdom, where it secured the West Coast Partnership contract in 2019, leading to the launch of Avanti West Coast services. These ventures reflect a broader strategy to dominate the European rail market through open-access services and collaborative consortia.
Despite its commercial success, Trenitalia has faced challenges, including public controversy. In 2012, the company withdrew a web advertisement after it was criticized for depicting racial segregation in its train classes. More recently, the company has focused on service quality and modernization. In 2024, it was recognized as the best European rail passenger operator in a comparative study by Transport & Environment, scoring 7.7 out of 10. This assessment evaluated reliability, amenities, and the integration of bicycles on long-distance routes, signaling a shift toward passenger-centric operations as the company continues to refine its high-speed ETR 1000 fleet.
