The breakaway Bulgarian kingdom that survived the Ottoman tide
In short: For nearly three decades, the Tsardom of Vidin stood as a defiant fragment of the Bulgarian Empire. While much of the Balkans succumbed to Ottoman expansion, this Danubian stronghold maintained a unique, isolated independence, serving as the final bastion of indigenous Bulgarian rule during a period of profound imperial collapse.
The Tsardom of Vidin emerged from a long history of semi-autonomous rule within the Second Bulgarian Empire. Since the mid-13th century, the Vidin region had operated under a loose Bulgarian overlordship. The lineage of its rulers was deeply intertwined with the Bulgarian throne; for instance, the despot Shishman, who ruled in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, was the progenitor of the Shishman dynasty. His son, Michael Shishman, eventually leveraged his noble status to be elected Emperor of Bulgaria in 1323, a move some historians view as a continuation of the House of Asen.
The formal establishment of Vidin as an independent Tsardom occurred in 1or 1356, when Tsar Ivan Alexander isolated the region from the central Bulgarian monarchy. He appointed his son, Ivan Stratsimir, as the absolute ruler. Although Hungarian crusaders occupied the city in 1365, diplomatic negotiations between the Kingdom of Hungary and Bulgarian allies like Vladislav I Vlaicu and the despot Dobrotitsa eventually restored the city to Bulgarian control by the autumn of 1369.
The era of Vidin's independence was defined by its precarious position between shifting powers. While the rest of Bulgaria fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1393, Vidin remained under the control of the indigenous Bulgarian population. This period of autonomy ended in 1396 following the defeat of Christian forces at the Battle of Nicopolis. While the region fell under the Ottoman sphere led by Bayezid I, some historians suggest that Constantine II may have continued to rule parts of the Bulgarian lands as a vassal until at least 1422.
