The dangerous 'neutral ground' where a tavern became a battlefield
In short: During the American Revolutionary War, Tuckahoe was not a safe haven but a lawless no-man's land. Situated between British and American lines, it became a corridor of devastating raids. One local inn served as a high-stakes intelligence post and a temporary headquarters for the British crown.
In the 1700s, Tuckahoe was a rural community within the larger town of Eastchester. Its geography placed it in a precarious position during the American Revolutionary War: it fell into the 'neutral ground' of Westchester County. The region acted as an unstable frontier separating American positions in the north from British lands to the south. Because the area lacked formal military protection, residents lived under constant threat, vulnerable to raids from both opposing sides.
Ward House, which was also referred to as Ward's House, remained central to these hostilities. Serving as a tavern and inn for Patriot head Stephen Ward, this residence primarily operated as a vital hub for gathering information. Its strategic importance was underscored when it briefly served as the British headquarters just before the Battle of White Plains. The site saw significant military engagements on October 23, 1776, and March 16, 1777.
The violence eventually reached its peak in 1778, when British troops burned Ward House to the ground. Because of its lasting importance, the building underwent reconstruction during the early 1790s following its initial design. Today, a version of this historic building still stands at 230 White Plains Road, serving as a physical remnant of a period when Tuckahoe was a primary theater of guerrilla warfare and espionage.
Before these conflicts, the area's identity was tied to the land farmed by tenants of Philipsburg Manor. The name 'Tuckahoe' itself predates colonial conflict, originating from Native American descriptions of bulbous roots used as food, translated roughly as "it is globular."
