In short: Born from a crowdfunding campaign in Utrecht, Volt Netherlands has rapidly moved from a political outsider to a fixture in national parliaments. While its early European bids fell short, the party leveraged university city support to transform its presence in the Dutch political landscape.

Founded on 23 June 2018 in Utrecht, Volt Netherlands began as the Dutch chapter of the broader Volt Europa movement. The party's initial establishment relied heavily on donations gathered through crowdfunding. Its first major test came during the 2019 European Parliament election, where it secured 106,004 votes. Although this was a significant showing, it fell more than 100,000 votes short of winning a seat in the European Parliament, though its German counterpart successfully secured one.

The party found its strongest footing in university hubs like Amsterdam, Leiden, Utrecht, and Wageningen. By the 2021 Dutch general election, Volt had achieved its first breakthrough into national legislature, winning three seats with 2.4% of the vote. This success was led by Laurens Dassen, alongside Nilüfer Gündoğan and Marieke Koekkoek. However, the party's growth has been marked by internal friction; in 2022, Gündoğan was expelled following allegations of undesirable behavior, a move that led to a civil court ruling reinstating her due to procedural errors.

Volt's platform is defined by a vision of a federal United Europe, advocating for a European constitution and the abolition of the veto right in the European Council. Their policy ambitions are vast, ranging from making the EU climate-neutral by 2040 to the creation of a European army. While the party has seen fluctuations in seat counts—winning two seats in the 2024 European Parliament election but dropping to just one seat in the 2025 general election—it remains a distinct voice advocating for structural European reform.
