In short: During the Cold War, the U.S. military deployed a weapon so compact it could be launched from a recoilless rifle. The W54 warhead was a masterpiece of miniature engineering, designed to strike Soviet troop formations with a precision and scale previously unseen in nuclear warfare.

The W54 warhead, part of the Davy Crockett system, represented the smallest and lightest fission bomb ever deployed by the United States. Developed in the late 1950s, the weapon was an implosion-type device based on plutonium-239. Its explosive yield was highly variable, ranging from as little as 0.01 kilotons—roughly 10 tons of TNT—up to 1 kiloton.

Engineering such a small device required managing extreme physical forces. While the warhead used in the AIM-26 Falcon missile experienced 17 g of acceleration, the Davy Crockett version faced much more violent conditions, enduring between 1,800 and 2,500 g for just 3 milliseconds. This disparity meant that a single environmental sensing device could not be used for both systems, leading to complex development paths for versions like the XW-54-X1 and XW-54-X2.

The Davy Crockett system was deployed by U.S. Army forces from 1961 to 1971. The weapon could be launched via 120-millimeter or 155-millimeter recoilless rifles, with ranges of approximately 1.24 miles and 2.49 miles, respectively. Between 1956 and 1963, the U.S. produced an estimated 2,100 units at a cost of about $540 million in 1996 dollars. The B54, weighing 58.6 pounds, functioned as part of the Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM), a type of nuclear land mine active in the United States, Guam, South Korea, and Europe between 1964 and 1989.
