How a small Virginia port town became the site of a decisive global turning point.
In short: Yorktown is famous as the location where General Charles Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington in 1781, effectively ending the American Revolutionary War in North America. Yet this quiet colonial settlement on the York River has a history that stretches far beyond that single, world-altering military victory.
Founded in 1691 by Thomas Ballard and Joseph Ring, Yorktown was initially established as a strategic port for exporting tobacco to Europe. By 1750, the town reached its peak, boasting nearly 2,000 residents and up to 300 buildings. Its location on the York River was considered ideal for shipping, as the deep water and high banks allowed large vessels to dock safely. However, the town's prominence eventually waned as the state capital moved to Richmond and tobacco farming exhausted the local soil, leading many residents to migrate westward.
The town's most enduring claim to fame remains the 1781 siege. General Cornwallis utilized the town as a base before his surrender to the combined American and French forces on October 19, 1781. This victory was supported by the French fleet and regiments like the Royal Deux-Ponts, which arrived with Rochambeau in 1780. The event was so significant that it is commemorated by the Yorktown Victory Monument, installed in 1884. The site also saw action during the American Civil War, serving as a critical port and a base for the Union Army of the Potomac during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign.
Today, Yorktown is managed as a historical colonial village, distinct from the rapid commercial development seen elsewhere in York County. It forms part of the Historic Triangle alongside Jamestown and Williamsburg, attracting heritage tourism. While the town itself remains small—with a population of 195 recorded in the 2010 census—it remains a vital link to the early history of the United States. Modern infrastructure, such as the Colonial Parkway, ensures that this preserved landscape continues to serve as a window into the colonial era.
