In short: In 1914, the only building at West Texas State Normal College burned to the ground. Rather than closing, students moved into local churches and courthouses to keep learning. This resilient spirit defined a campus that would eventually host icons like Georgia O'Keeffe.

Originally founded in Texas as West Texas State Normal College on 20 September 1910, this school opened as a state-supported teachers' college among seven others. In its inaugural year, the campus served 152 all-white students with a faculty of 16. The school's early physical footprint was modest; its first Administration Building housed every classroom, laboratory, library, and office on site.

The institution faced a literal trial by fire in 1914 when that primary building was destroyed. Demonstrating a commitment to education over infrastructure, classes continued in vacant buildings and local civic spaces until a new Administration Building opened in 1916. This era also saw a significant cultural milestone: the college hired the "Mother of American modernism," Georgia O'Keeffe, to lead the Art Department from late 1916 to early 1918.

The university's growth accelerated through the 20th century. It transitioned to West Texas State Teachers College in 1923 and began granting four-year degrees in 1919. Following World War II, the campus faced a different kind of pressure: an influx of veterans using the G.I. Bill. The overcrowding was so severe that students slept in the gymnasium, with beds sourced from a former prisoner of war camp in Hereford.

Today, West Texas A&M University serves as the northernmost senior institution of higher learning in Texas. It has evolved into a comprehensive system offering 59 undergraduate programs and over 40 graduate degrees, maintaining a student-to-teacher ratio of 15:1. The university continues to balance its historical legacy with modern expansion, including a new 22,000-square-foot public safety facility opening in 2026.
