Born from a legal battle over digital censorship, Angel Studios transformed from a niche filtering service into a publicly traded powerhouse. By leveraging equity crowdfunding and a massive, voting-based membership guild, the company has bypassed traditional studio gatekeepers to produce and distribute global hits like Sound of Freedom.
Founded in 2013 by the Harmon brothers and Benton Crane, the company originally operated as VidAngel, a service allowing users to skip or mute content in films. This model triggered a 2016 lawsuit from major studios, including Disney and Warner Bros., alleging copyright infringement. Following a 2017 bankruptcy reorganization and a settlement that restricted its filtering activities, the founders pivoted to a new business model: equity crowdfunding for original content.
In 2021, the company rebranded as Angel Studios. Its strategy centers on the Angel Guild, a paid membership program where thousands of members vote on which projects the company should pursue. This community-driven approach has financed projects like the animated series The Wingfeather Saga and Tuttle Twins. The company’s influence grew significantly with the 2023 release of Sound of Freedom, which grossed over $250 million worldwide, marking a major success for its theatrical distribution division.
The company's growth has not been without friction. It faced a high-profile arbitration with the creators of The Chosen, a series it helped launch via crowdfunding, which eventually led to the termination of its distribution rights. Despite such disputes and controversies surrounding the political associations of some of its projects, Angel Studios achieved an implied valuation of approximately $1.6 billion following a reverse recapitalization with Southport Acquisition Corporation in September 2025. Today, the company continues to expand its global footprint through international output agreements and a growing library of original content, including its long-running Dry Bar Comedy series.
