The child actor who became a sci-fi icon and musical pioneer
In short: Before he was the face of a space-faring odyssey, Bill Mumy was a child prodigy navigating the studio system. From 1960s television dramas to 1990s sci-fi epics and a prolific career as a multi-instrumentalist, Mumy’s journey illustrates a rare, lifelong mastery of diverse creative mediums.
Born in 1954, Bill Mumy entered the professional world at just seven years old. He quickly became a staple of 1960s television, appearing in over 400 episodes across various networks. His early career was marked by high-profile roles in series like 'Bewitched', 'I Dream of Jeannie', and 'The Twilight Zone'. One of his most notable early appearances was in 'National Velvet' in 1960, followed by multiple roles in 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' and 'The Fugitive'. Mumy’s most enduring legacy is his portrayal of Will Robinson in the sci-fi series 'Lost in Space' from 1965 to 1968. Over 84 episodes, he became synonymous with the character's iconic warnings. Despite his early fame, Mumy navigated the industry with versatility, moving into adult roles in the 1970s and 1990s.
He notably played the ambassadorial aide Lennier in 'Babylon 5' from 1994 to 1998, a role that required prosthetic makeup—a contrast to his later preference for human roles in projects like 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'. Beyond the screen, Mumy is a prolific musician and writer. At age 16, he formed the novelty act Barnes & Barnes, whose video for 'Fish Heads' reached MTV during the channel's infancy. He has since performed as a solo artist, a member of the band Seduction of the Innocent, and a collaborator with artists like Rick Springfield. His literary contributions include co-authoring several books on 'Lost in Space' and creating comic books like 'Comet Man' with the late Miguel Ferrer.
