Before he was a screen star, Max Beesley toured with global music legends
In short: Born into a family of jazz musicians, Max Beesley spent his early career as a session percussionist and pianist for icons like Robbie Williams and Stevie Wonder. After years of touring, he pivoted to acting, eventually becoming a familiar face in major television dramas and high-profile international film productions.
Born in Manchester in 1971, Maxton Gig Beesley Jr. was immersed in music from childhood. His father was a professional jazz drummer, and his mother performed as a jazz singer. His formal training began as a chorister at Manchester Cathedral, followed by studies at Chetham's School of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. By age 18, he was already working with Paul Weller, and he later toured with the band Incognito. His musical journey saw him recording or performing alongside artists including Earth, Wind & Fire, George Benson, and Jamiroquai, while also playing at major events like Live 8 London.
In 1994, Beesley made a decisive shift from music to acting. He gained prominence with his 1997 debut in the BBC mini-series The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. He later starred in the critically acclaimed medical drama Bodies, which won a Royal Television Society award, and appeared in various international projects, including the US series Suits and Homeland. His acting career is underpinned by a commitment to method acting, having been tutored by Sheila Gray in Manhattan. This dedication has led to roles in diverse productions ranging from the period drama Jamestown to Guy Ritchie's 2024 series The Gentlemen.
Despite his success on screen, Beesley has maintained his connection to music. In 2020, he recorded his first solo album, Groove Spectrum, at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, collaborating with artists like Fred Durst and Lisa Stansfield. He followed this in 2023 with an instrumental album titled Zeus, released under his 'Max Beesley's HIGH VIBES' banner. This project, which features the vibraphone, showcases his multi-instrumentalist background and draws influence from jazz greats like Herbie Hancock and Roy Ayers. Today, Beesley balances his dual identity as a working actor and a dedicated musician, continuing to tour and produce his own compositions.
