From 25 sawmills to a global retail giant
In short: Brunswick, Maine, was once the industrial engine of the state, powered by the vertical drop of the Androscoggin River. While it once dominated the lumber and textile trades, the town’s economic DNA has shifted from heavy manufacturing to modern retail and high-level services.
In the 19th century, Brunswick's geography dictated its wealth. The Androscoggin River falls in three successive stages, creating a total vertical drop of 41 feet. This provided the water power necessary to turn Brunswick into a major industrial hub. By the turn of the century, the town was a powerhouse of production, boasting as many as 25 sawmills. Beyond lumber, the town became a diverse manufacturing center producing paper, soap, flour, marble, granite, carriages, furniture, and even confections.
The town also served as a pioneer for Maine's industrial revolution. It hosted the state's first cotton mill, the Brunswick Cotton Manufactory Company, in 1809. By 1857, the Cabot Manufacturing Company further expanded the textile industry along the falls. This industrial growth was so significant that in 1890, the company successfully persuaded the town to move Maine Street—originally an old Indian trail—to accommodate its expanding brick factory.
Today, the economic landscape has evolved. While the town remains a hub for manufacturing, its principal employers now include the global retail brand L.L. Bean, Bath Iron Works, and Atlantic Federal Credit Union. The town also serves as a center for health services for the mid-coast area. This transition from a 19th-century lumber and textile center to a modern mix of retail, manufacturing, and services reflects the broader shift in the American industrial economy.
Despite these changes, Brunswick maintains its historical identity. It remains a site of significant cultural and educational weight, housing Bowdoin College and serving as the location where Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' while living in the town.
