How a Compton drug dealer transformed his illicit earnings into a hip-hop empire
Eric Wright, known as Eazy-E, turned street-level capital into Ruthless Records, the powerhouse behind N.W.A. By leveraging a controversial persona and shrewd business instincts, he navigated the volatile landscape of 1980s Los Angeles to pioneer gangsta rap, forever altering the trajectory of American music and cultural influence.
Born in 1964 in Compton, California, Eric Wright grew up in a community shifting under the pressures of white flight and gang formation. After dropping out of high school, he supported himself through drug dealing, a role he later described as a form of armor in a dangerous environment. By 1986, at age 22, he had allegedly accumulated $250,000. Following the death of his cousin, Wright pivoted toward the burgeoning Los Angeles hip-hop scene, using his savings to establish Ruthless Records in his parents' garage.
In 1987, Wright partnered with music industry veteran Jerry Heller, who had previously represented artists like Elton John and Marvin Gaye. Their business arrangement was structured with Wright retaining 80 percent of net income while Heller received 20 percent. Heller claims he eventually invested up to $1,000,000 into the label. This capital fueled the rise of N.W.A, a group that included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince. Their 1988 debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton, became a cultural touchstone, though internal disputes over money and management eventually fractured the group.
Wright's career was marked by intense rivalries, most notably with Dr. Dre and Ice Cube after they departed for solo careers. Despite these conflicts, Wright remained a significant industry force, signing acts like Bone Thugs-n-Harmony. His life ended abruptly in 1995 at age 30, just one month after being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Posthumously, his legacy has been cemented through his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024, reflecting his status as the 'Godfather of Gangsta Rap'.
