From Rural Management to Governor: The Political Ascent of Eduardo Riedel
Eduardo Riedel transitioned from managing family rural property to becoming the 12th Governor of Mato Grosso do Sul. His career reflects a shift from agricultural leadership to strategic government management, culminating in a 2022 electoral victory that saw him succeed his predecessor, Reinaldo Azambuja, in leading the Brazilian state.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1969, Eduardo Riedel built his early professional foundation in the agricultural sector. After taking over the management of his family's rural property in Maracaju in 1995, he moved into leadership roles within industry organizations. He served as president of the Maracaju Union in 1999 and later held the presidency of Famasul between 2012 and 2014. These positions provided the management experience that would eventually propel him into the state government.
Riedel entered public service in 2015, serving as the Secretary of State for Government and Strategic Management under Governor Reinaldo Azambuja. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he took on a prominent role as the chairman of the Management Committee for the state's Health and Safety Program (Proseguir). During this period, he notably opposed judicial efforts to impose a lockdown in Campo Grande, arguing that such measures were less effective than direct dialogue and concrete action. His tenure also included the implementation of social initiatives like the 'More Social' program, which provides monthly aid to over 100,000 families.
In 2022, Riedel successfully transitioned to electoral politics. Running for governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, he secured 25.16% of the vote in the first round before winning the runoff on October 30 with 56.90% of the vote. Since his inauguration on January 1, 2023, his administration has focused on public-private partnerships, such as the Infovia Digital project, and infrastructure development. Despite facing challenges like the temporary suspension of highway contracts in the Pantanal by the State Court of Auditors in July 2023, Riedel has maintained a focus on continuity, retaining several key figures from the previous administration to ensure stability in his government.
