In short: A prominent figure in Brazilian politics, Guilherme Boulos rose to national prominence through his activism with the Homeless Workers' Movement. Once a key figure in land occupations, he has transitioned from grassroots organizing to the highest levels of government, serving as Secretary-General of the Presidency.

Guilherme Castro Boulos, born on 19 June 1982, is a Brazilian politician and activist whose career is deeply rooted in the National Coordination of Homeless Workers' Movement (MTST), which he joined in 2002. He gained national recognition in 2003 during an occupation of Volkswagen land in São Bernardo do Campo. This early activism defined his political trajectory, leading to further high-profile mobilizations, such as the 'Occupation People's Cup' organized by the MTST in May 2014 during the World Cup social mobilizations.

Boulos's political ascent includes a 2018 presidential candidacy for the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL). In 2020, he ran for mayor of São Paulo, reaching a second-round run-off against the PSDB candidate Bruno Covas, though he was ultimately defeated. His political impact expanded during the 2022 general election; he won a seat in the Chamber of Deputies representing São Paulo, gaining more votes for federal deputy than any other candidate in that state.

Beyond his political roles, Boulos is an academic and author. After graduating with a philosophy degree in 2006, he obtained a master's in mental health from the University of São Paulo in 2017. His political connections are notable; he is closely associated with President Lula da Silva, with many observers noting his physical resemblance to the president in his youth. In 2021, Time magazine recognized him on its Time 100 Next list of emerging global leaders.

His career has not been without legal friction. In January 2017, he was arrested on charges of incitement to violence and judicial disobedience during a land repossession lawsuit in São Mateus, though he was released the same evening. He has maintained that his detention was arbitrary and politically motivated.
