How a Blizzard mod dispute birthed a unique team-based multiplayer battle arena
Heroes of the Storm began as a modding showcase for StarCraft II, only to evolve into a distinct MOBA. By prioritizing shared team experience over individual progression, it challenged genre norms. Though development scaled back in 2022, the game remains a complex intersection of Blizzard's most iconic gaming universes.
The origins of Heroes of the Storm trace back to 2010, when Blizzard announced a custom map called Blizzard DOTA for StarCraft II. This project was intended to demonstrate the game's modding capabilities. However, the title became the subject of a legal dispute with Valve, which had trademarked the term Dota. By 2012, the companies settled: Valve retained commercial rights to the name, while Blizzard rebranded its project to Blizzard All-Stars, eventually settling on the final title in 2013.
Mechanically, the game distinguishes itself from traditional MOBAs through its emphasis on collective progress. Unlike competitors that track experience per player, Heroes of the Storm utilizes a shared team experience system. When a team hits specific thresholds, every hero levels up simultaneously. This design choice forces players to prioritize teamwork and strategic planning, as individual actions directly impact the team's overall power. Matches typically last 20 minutes, centering on objectives across 15 distinct battlegrounds.
The game's ecosystem is built on a freemium model using three currencies: Gold, Gems, and Shards. While heroes can be purchased with Gold or Gems, cosmetic items like skins and mounts are primarily acquired through Shards or Gems. In 2017, the game underwent a major overhaul known as Heroes 2.0, which introduced Loot Chests and removed previous level caps. This update reflected the game's role as a crossover hub, featuring 89 playable characters from Warcraft, Diablo, StarCraft, and Overwatch.
Despite scaling back major development in July 2022, the game continues to receive balance updates and bug fixes. The title's legacy is defined by its unique approach to the MOBA genre, blending diverse art styles and mechanics from Blizzard's history. In 2026, Blizzard announced plans to revive the game, signaling a new chapter for the title that once began as a simple mod.
