Jimmy Wales founded Wikipedia with the vision of providing free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Though he once estimated the site was worth three billion dollars, he donated it to a non-profit foundation, choosing to act as a symbolic constitutional monarch rather than a wealthy owner.
Born in 1966 in Huntsville, Alabama, Jimmy Wales spent his early years in a private school run by his mother and grandmother. His fascination with encyclopedias began as a child, when he updated his mother's World Book set with provided stickers. After earning finance degrees, he worked as a futures and options trader in Chicago during the 1990s. This career provided the capital to launch Bomis, a web portal that eventually funded his true passion: an online encyclopedia.
In 2000, Wales launched Nupedia, a peer-reviewed project that struggled due to its rigid, academic structure. In 2001, he and Larry Sanger pivoted to a wiki-based model, creating Wikipedia. While the project was initially intended to be a for-profit venture, it quickly evolved into a non-profit, community-driven effort. Wales established the Wikimedia Foundation in 2003 to house the project, a move he has described as both the smartest and dumbest decision of his life. He remains a board member, holding a 'community founder' seat, though he has faced criticism over the years regarding his influence and his contentious relationship with co-founder Larry Sanger.
Wales’s political philosophy has shifted over time, moving from an early interest in Objectivism to a self-described centrist and gradualist approach. He has advised the UK government on open-access research, served on a Google privacy committee, and launched initiatives like WikiTribune and WT Social to combat misinformation. Despite his status as an internet celebrity and his role as a public face for the Wikimedia Foundation, he maintains that his influence is akin to a modern monarch—possessing the right to be consulted and to warn, but holding no real power over the volunteer community that sustains the encyclopedia.
