How a banana entrepreneur became Haiti's president before his violent, mysterious assassination
Jovenel Moïse rose from rural agricultural development to the Haitian presidency, championing agrarian reform and infrastructure. Yet, his tenure was defined by intense political instability, corruption allegations, and a brutal assassination in 2021. His life remains a complex study of power, economic ambition, and the volatile nature of Haitian governance.
Born in 1968, Jovenel Moïse began his career as an entrepreneur, founding JoMar Auto Parts and later managing a large-scale banana plantation through his company, Agritrans SA. His business ventures were heavily supported by the state, receiving tax exemptions and a $6 million loan. Despite projections of thousands of jobs, the enterprise struggled to meet its goals, shipping only two containers of bananas to Germany.
In 2015, Moïse was selected as the presidential candidate for the Haitian Tèt Kale Party. His path to power was marked by controversy; the 2015 election was annulled following allegations of fraud and widespread protests. He eventually secured the presidency in 2016 with 55.67% of the vote, though turnout was estimated at only 21%. His administration focused on rural infrastructure, including hydroelectric dams and road construction, but faced persistent accusations of embezzlement and the use of violent gangs to suppress political opposition.
The end of his presidency was as turbulent as its beginning. Moïse was shot and killed in his residence on 7 July 2021. The investigation into his death has been fraught with complexity, involving accusations against high-ranking officials, including his successor, Ariel Henry. Reports have linked the assassination to his potential efforts to expose narcotics trafficking among the elite. By 2024, the legal fallout continued, with indictments against his widow and former government officials, highlighting the deep fractures within the Haitian state.
