How a dropout from Stanford became the architect of India's largest corporate empire

Mukesh Ambani transformed a modest family trading firm into a global industrial powerhouse. From building the world's most massive grassroots oil refinery to dominating telecommunications, his influence spans energy, finance, and sports. Yet, his immense wealth and proximity to political power have sparked intense debate about inequality and corporate governance.

Born in 1957 in Aden, Mukesh Ambani returned to India as a child, living in a simple two-bedroom apartment in Mumbai. His father, Dhirubhai, founded Reliance Industries, which grew from a small spice and textile venture into India's largest public company by market capitalization. In 1980, Ambani famously withdrew from his MBA program at Stanford University at his father's request to help manage the rapidly expanding family business, prioritizing practical experience over formal classroom education.

Ambani’s career is defined by massive industrial scaling. He spearheaded the construction of the Jamnagar refinery, a colossal facility capable of processing 660,000 barrels of oil daily. Beyond energy, he diversified into retail, media, and telecommunications, notably launching 4G broadband services. His personal residence, Antilia, a 27-storey skyscraper in Mumbai, remains a symbol of his status, valued at US$1 billion upon completion and requiring a staff of 600 to maintain.

Despite his achievements, including election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2016, Ambani’s tenure has been marked by controversy. Reliance Industries faced significant fines in 2007 for market manipulation involving its former subsidiary, Reliance Petroleum. Furthermore, his close ties to political leadership and the immense scale of his family's recent celebrations—such as the 2024 wedding of his son Anant—have drawn criticism regarding wealth disparity in India. Today, he remains a polarizing figure, simultaneously celebrated for his business acumen and scrutinized for his influence on the national economy.
