From Spices to Supercomputing: How Reliance Industries Became India’s Corporate Titan

Starting as a small commodity trader in 1958, Reliance Industries has evolved into a massive conglomerate spanning energy, retail, and advanced technology. Today, it stands as India’s largest public company, driving 7% of the nation's merchandise exports while aggressively expanding into artificial intelligence, aerospace, and global digital markets.

Founded by Dhirubhai Ambani in 1958 as the Reliance Commercial Corporation, the firm initially focused on trading spices and polyester yarn. By 1966, it had incorporated as Reliance Textiles Industries, eventually launching the iconic 'Vimal' brand. The company went public in 1977, setting the stage for decades of rapid diversification. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Reliance moved heavily into petrochemicals and refining, constructing the world's largest refinery complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and securing major gas discoveries in the Krishna Godavari basin.

In the 21st century, Reliance pivoted toward consumer-facing and digital sectors. It launched the retail giant Reliance Retail in 2006 and, in 2010, acquired Infotel Broadband Services to enter the 4G market. This digital ambition culminated in the creation of Jio Platforms, a technology subsidiary that attracted massive investments from global giants like Facebook, Google, and Intel. By 2024, the company’s reach extended to generative AI through its 'Hanuman' LLM project and a major media merger with The Walt Disney Company.

The conglomerate’s influence is now felt in high-stakes sectors like defense and computing. In 2024, it partnered with Nvidia to procure Blackwell chips for a new data center, and in 2026, it announced a strategic intent to collaborate with Rolls-Royce on indigenous aero engine manufacturing for combat aircraft. Despite its scale—boasting over 200 subsidiaries and a market capitalization of US$223.78 billion as of late 2022—the company has faced persistent controversy regarding allegations of political cronyism and financial manipulation. As the Ambani family manages a leadership transition, the firm remains a central, if polarizing, pillar of the Indian economy.
