How a soda brand invented the concept of lifestyle marketing
In short: Before the 1960s, soda ads were about price and volume. Then came a daring gamble: stop selling the drink and start selling the identity of the person drinking it. By claiming a whole generation as its own, Pepsi pioneered a marketing blueprint that still defines modern branding.
In 1963, PepsiCo advertising executive Alan Pottasch launched the 'Pepsi Generation' campaign. It was a radical departure from the brand's previous strategy, which had focused on 'better value'—specifically highlighting that 12-ounce bottles contained nearly twice as much beverage as standard 7-ounce Coca-Cola bottles. Instead of competing on price or volume, the new campaign sought to position Pepsi as a cultural ally to the 'young' side of the 1960s generation gap.
The campaign functioned by associating the product with desirable traits like youth, spirit, and activity. While Coca-Cola ads of the era often featured nostalgic, Norman Rockwell-style imagery of small towns and Santa Claus, Pepsi ads showcased young people engaging in exotic activities like motorcycle riding or piloting windships through deserts. The goal was to convince consumers that there were 'Coke people' and 'Pepsi people,' and that choosing Pepsi meant being on the side of the future.
This shift marked one of the first major instances of 'lifestyle marketing,' where the focus moved from product characteristics to the consumer's identity. The strategy was so effective that it forced a response from Coca-Cola, which launched its own 'hip' lifestyle campaign in 1971. The legacy of this approach continued through the 1980s and 90s, evolving into 'The Choice of a New Generation' and eventually 'GeneratioNext,' a campaign that explicitly positioned its audience as the antithesis of Generation X by embracing the 'next wave' of culture.
