His journey from humble beginnings to revolutionizing how students learn is a testament to the power of accessibility.
Born in 1976 in Louisiana, Sal Khan grew up in a household facing significant financial constraints. Despite these challenges, he excelled academically, earning multiple degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard. His career path initially led him into the world of finance, where he spent several years working as an analyst for a hedge fund. However, a simple act of tutoring his cousin in 2004 sparked a shift that would eventually redefine his professional trajectory.
Khan’s pedagogical philosophy centers on the flipped classroom model and mastery learning, concepts that allow students to progress at their own pace before applying knowledge in collaborative settings. In 2006, he formalized this approach by launching Khan Academy, moving his video tutorials to YouTube. The platform’s rapid growth eventually allowed him to leave his finance career behind in 2009 to focus on his mission full-time. His work has since garnered support from major organizations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and inspired other massive open online course platforms.
Beyond his digital platform, Khan has expanded his influence through the establishment of the Khan Lab School and the Schoolhouse initiative, which provides global small-group tutoring.
