Can Elon Musk’s Boring Company actually make underground transit fast and cheap enough?
The Boring Company aims to revolutionize urban transit by drastically increasing tunneling speeds. While the firm has successfully launched the Las Vegas Loop, many other ambitious projects have stalled or vanished. Can its radical engineering approach—like porpoising machines and continuous mining—finally turn subterranean travel into a viable commodity?
Founded by Elon Musk in 2017 as a SpaceX subsidiary, The Boring Company (TBC) seeks to solve urban traffic congestion by moving transportation underground. The company’s core philosophy centers on enhancing tunneling speed to make network construction financially feasible. By 2018, TBC had spun off into a separate entity, and by April 2022, it reached a valuation of approximately $5.675 billion following a $675 million Series C funding round.
TBC’s engineering strategy relies on rapid iteration and unconventional methods. Its Prufrock machines introduced "porpoising," allowing the TBM to enter and exit the ground at an angle, eliminating the need for massive, costly entrance and exit excavations. The company also employs "zero people in tunnel" (ZPIT) remote operations and autonomous liner trucks to maintain continuous progress. The goal is to maximize uptime, moving from conventional systems that pause every five feet to a 24-hour continuous operation model.
Despite these innovations, the company’s track record is uneven. While the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is operational and expanding, numerous high-profile projects in cities like Chicago, Baltimore, and San Antonio were canceled or abandoned after initial announcements. Critics and local authorities have occasionally cited environmental violations or skepticism regarding cost projections, as seen when New South Wales officials estimated a project cost far higher than Musk’s initial suggestion. Whether TBC can scale its technology to meet its ambitious goals remains a subject of intense scrutiny.
