The world's thinnest skyscraper rises above a historic New York City musical landmark
In short: Standing on Billionaires' Row, 111 West 57th Street is a marvel of engineering that pairs a 1,428-foot residential tower with the restored 1925 Steinway Hall. This pencil-thin structure, with its extreme proportions, pushes the boundaries of modern architecture while preserving a century-old legacy of classical music and craftsmanship.
Completed in 2022, the Steinway Tower represents a unique fusion of architectural eras. The base, Steinway Hall, was originally designed by Warren and Wetmore as a neoclassical hub for Steinway & Sons, featuring a rotunda adorned with Italian marble and paintings by Paul Arndt. While the hall struggled as a speculative development for decades, it remained a cultural landmark. The modern residential addition, designed by SHoP Architects, rises 84 stories above this historic foundation, creating a striking contrast between the ornate, brick-and-terracotta base and the sleek, glass-and-bronze tower.
The tower is defined by its extreme slenderness, boasting a height-to-width ratio of approximately 24 to 1. To stabilize such a narrow form against high-altitude winds, engineers implemented a sophisticated structural system. The core is supported by two massive shear walls, and the building features a tuned mass damper weighing 800 short tons at its peak. Additionally, three open-air mechanical floors allow wind to pass through the structure, effectively reducing vibrations caused by vortex shedding. These technical interventions ensure stability while allowing for expansive, column-free floor plans that offer unobstructed views of Central Park.
The interior design reflects the building's musical heritage. Studio Sofield incorporated motifs inspired by piano construction, such as ebony and elephant-themed murals in the lobby, and custom bronze hardware shaped like the tower’s own silhouette. The residential units, which start above the 17th story to clear neighboring obstructions, utilize high-end materials like onyx and quartzite. By integrating the restored Steinway Hall—complete with its original rotunda—with a record-breaking contemporary skyscraper, the project successfully bridges the gap between the artistic history of 57th Street and the ultra-luxury demands of modern Manhattan real estate.
