From construction site to chart success: The rapid rise of Manchester rapper Aitch
In short: Harrison James Armstrong, known as Aitch, transformed from a local Manchester teenager rapping for friends into a major force in British music. With eleven top-10 singles and a debut album that reached number two, he has become a household name while maintaining his roots and supporting charitable causes.
Born in New Moston, Manchester, on December 9, 1999, Harrison James Armstrong initially pursued sports and construction work after leaving school. His path changed when a video of him rapping to friends, which he originally hoped would remain private, gained traction online. Encouraged by the response, he began sharing his freestyles on the P110 YouTube channel in 2016, eventually breaking into the national spotlight with his 2018 track, 'Straight Rhymez'.
Aitch’s stage name is a phonetic nod to the first letter of his birth name. His career trajectory has been defined by consistent chart performance, including his 2022 debut studio album, 'Close to Home', which secured the second spot on the UK Albums Chart. His success is marked by collaborations with artists like AJ Tracey and Ashanti, the latter appearing on his hit 'Baby', which sampled her 2003 track 'Rock wit U (Awww Baby)'.
Beyond the charts, Aitch has engaged with broader media and advocacy. He served as an ambassador for the Down's Syndrome Association, donating the budget from his 'My G' music video—a song dedicated to his sister, Gracie—to the organization. His public profile has also expanded through television appearances, including a stint on the twenty-fifth season of a popular survival reality series in 2025, where he finished in fourth place despite high expectations from bookmakers.
His influence extends to live performance and cultural events, such as his halftime show at the 2023 Sidemen Charity Match held at the London Stadium. Whether through his musical output or his public advocacy, Aitch has navigated a swift transition from local freestyler to a prominent figure in the contemporary British music landscape.
