One stage performance of Othello launched Aaron Pierre toward Green Lantern
Aaron Pierre spent his childhood sprinting and idolising Maurice Greene, not rehearsing lines. Then Barry Jenkins watched him play Cassio at Shakespeare's Globe and messaged him afterwards. That note led to The Underground Railroad, the voice of Mufasa, and a starring role as John Stewart, the DC Universe's Green Lantern.
Pierre was born in London on 7 June 1994 to a Jamaican mother, with Curacaoan and Sierra Leonean roots on his father's side. Acting caught his interest as a teenager, through the Croydon Young People's Theatre, performing arts at Lewisham College and a spell of training in Toronto, before he graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2016. Early television included small parts in The A Word and a Roman soldier in Britannia, then in 2018 a regular role as Dev-Em in the Syfy series Krypton.
Theatre gave him his breakthrough. As Cassio in the Globe's 2018 Othello he earned an Ian Charleson Award commendation, and in 2019 he played opposite Lenny Henry in King Hedley II in Stratford East. Jenkins, having seen the Othello, invited him to audition and cast him as Caesar in The Underground Railroad, which Amazon released in May 2021. That summer he popped up as a rapper in M. Night Shyamalan's Old, and Jenkins later chose him again to voice the young Mufasa in the 2024 Lion King prequel.
Not every job came off. Marvel signed him for its Blade film in 2022, then released him in March 2024 after script rewrites. He fared better elsewhere: playing Francis in Brother won him best supporting film performance at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards, and he stepped into Rebel Ridge when John Boyega withdrew for family reasons. GQ labelled 2024 his breakout year, pointing to that Netflix thriller, his Malcolm X in Genius: MLK/X, and his casting that October as John Stewart for the Lanterns series.
Away from sets he boxes, having started in 2016, and added Brazilian jiu-jitsu three years later, taking his first tournament win in 2023. During publicity for Lanterns in 2026 he spoke openly about having been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
