In short: After defining the 1960s as the Caped Crusader, Adam West spent decades fighting the shadow of his own mask. Rather than fading away, he embraced the absurdity, turning his typecasting into a self-aware performance art that spanned decades, animated cameos, and a permanent place in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Born William West Anderson in 1928, the actor took the name Adam West before finding fame in the 1966 ABC series Batman. While the role brought him international recognition, it also created a professional trap. Along with co-stars Burt Ward and Yvonne Craig, West found himself typecast, struggling to secure serious acting work once the show concluded in 1968. His attempt to break the mold in the 1969 film The Girl Who Knew Too Much failed to resonate with audiences who could only see him as the hero of Gotham.

West eventually pivoted by leaning into his own image. He began making personal appearances as Batman and later utilized his distinctive voice for a prolific career in animation, often playing parodied versions of himself. This meta-commentary defined his later years, from his recurring role as Mayor Adam West on Family Guy to his appearance as a washed-up superhero in the Goosebumps series. He frequently revisited his iconic character, including a 1985 honor from DC Comics and his final voice performance in the 2017 animated feature Batman vs. Two-Face.

His career was marked by a persistent refusal to fully abandon the role that defined him. When offered the chance to play Thomas Wayne in the 1989 Batman film, he declined because he wanted to play the lead again. By the time he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012, West had successfully transitioned from a struggling actor to a beloved icon. His legacy is now celebrated annually in his hometown of Walla Walla, Washington, where 'Adam West Day' is held on his birthday, September 19.
