How the Academy Award for Best Actor evolved from a broad honor to specific recognition.
In short: The Academy Award for Best Actor has been presented 98 times to 87 different performers. While today we associate the honor with a single, definitive performance, the award’s early years were far more flexible, allowing actors to be recognized for multiple films at once before the rules shifted.
The Academy Award for Best Actor, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has undergone significant structural changes since its inception. Initially, the award recognized an actor's body of work during a specific eligibility period, meaning a single nomination could encompass up to three different films. This broad approach lasted for the first three years of the ceremony. By the 4th Academy Awards, the Academy transitioned to the current system, which mandates that an actor be nominated for a specific performance in a single film.
The selection process is equally rigorous. Nominees are determined by a single transferable vote within the actors branch of the Academy, while the final winner is chosen by a plurality vote from the entire eligible membership. The eligibility window has also evolved; while the first five ceremonies covered a twelve-month span from August to July, the 6th ceremony featured an extended period. Since the 7th ceremony in 1935, the eligibility window has been strictly defined as the previous calendar year.
Historical records highlight the unique nature of these accolades. The record for the most wins is held by Daniel Day-Lewis with three, while Spencer Tracy and Laurence Olivier share the record for the most nominations at nine. Interestingly, the 5th Academy Awards in 1932 saw the only instance of a tie, where Fredric March and Wallace Beery shared the award after finishing just one vote apart. Over the decades, the presentation of the award has also shifted, moving from a tradition where the previous year's Best Actress winner presented the trophy to a practice where recent Best Actor winners perform the honors.
