In short: Malavika Mohanan didn't start her career by auditioning for the spotlight. She was discovered while working on a commercial shoot, leading to a path that saw her outcompete major stars for a role in one of India's most acclaimed international dramas.

Born in Payyanur and raised in Mumbai, Malavika Mohanan initially intended to follow her father’s footsteps as a cinematographer or director. After completing a Mass Media degree at Wilson College, she was working on a commercial shoot for a fairness cream when the legendary actor Mammootty noticed her. He invited her to audition for his son's film, which led to her debut in Pattam Pole (2013). During that project, she even acted as her own costume designer due to the original designer's illness.

Her career trajectory shifted significantly with Majid Majidi’s 2017 drama Beyond the Clouds. Mohanan won the role of Tara over high-profile actresses like Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut. To achieve authenticity for her portrayal of a slum dweller from Mumbai's Dhobi Ghat, she underwent rigorous physical preparation, losing eight kilograms in just fifteen days and intentionally avoiding washing her hair to maintain the character's weathered look. The film became a critical success on the international festival circuit.

Mohanan has since expanded into Tamil, Kannada, and Telugu cinema. She notably starred in the 2019 blockbuster Petta alongside Rajinikanth and appeared in the 2021 action thriller Master, which became her highest-grossing film to date. Her recent work continues to garner critical acclaim; in the 2025 film Hridayapoorvam, she was described by critics as a 'revelation,' proving her ability to transform through diverse roles under different directorial visions.

Beyond her screen presence, Mohanan has balanced her career with interests in fashion and media. She launched an ethnic fusion fashion blog called "The Scarlet Window" while navigating the complexities of multi-lingual cinema, even hiring a Tamil tutor to master lines for her debut in that language. Her steady rise is reflected in her consistent placement on various 'Most Desirable Women' lists throughout the late 2010s.
