In short: Benjamin Clementine’s music is often described as a mix of revolt and love, a sound that feels both ancient and immediate. But before he became a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, he was a vagabond sleeping on the streets of Paris, busking with a half-broken guitar.

Born in London in 1988, Benjamin Clementine’s musical path was initially obstructed by his father, who forbade him from playing instruments in hopes he would study law. Despite this, Clementine secretly spent five years imitating composers like Erik Satie and Claude Debussy by listening to the radio. This period of clandestine practice laid the groundwork for a style that critics now struggle to categorize, blending sophisticated lyricism with slang, shouts, and prose monologues.

Clementine’s life took a radical turn at age 16 when he became homeless in Camden Town. By 19, he moved to Paris, where he spent years as a vagabond, sleeping on the streets and living in a ten-man bunk-bed room in Montmartre for €20. During this era, he developed a cult following in the Parisian music scene, composing songs on a cheap keyboard and a broken guitar while living as a 'wanderer.'

His transition to the mainstream began in 2012 after he was discovered by an agent and partnered with a French business mogul to form the label 'Behind.' His debut album, At Least for Now, won the 2015 Mercury Prize and reached the Top 10 in several European countries. His work is deeply personal, influenced by psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott and his own experiences with childhood bullying, often exploring themes of loneliness and the 'alien' experience of being different.

Clementine is a spinto tenor with a range of approximately E2-C#6. His performances are noted for their raw intensity; he has been known to perform topless and barefoot, and even continued to play during a 2015 concert in Paris after cutting his finger open. While he has achieved significant acclaim, he has hinted at a potential retirement from music following the release of his 'Part Two' project in 2023.
