How a studio born from nuclear research became a titan of computer animation
In short: Founded by physicists and engineers, Blue Sky Studios began by calculating radiation rays for the government. It eventually pivoted to groundbreaking CGI, creating the iconic Ice Age franchise and pioneering automated lighting techniques. Despite its massive commercial success, the studio was abruptly shuttered by Disney after thirty-four years of innovation.
Blue Sky Studios originated in 1987, founded by six former employees of the Mathematical Applications Group (MAGI), including Chris Wedge and Eugene Troubetzkoy. MAGI had previously utilized SynthaVision software to simulate physics for nuclear radiation measurements. When the company folded, the founders leveraged their expertise in CGI to transition into commercial animation. They developed a proprietary language, CGI Studio, which replaced manual lighting with automated ray tracing, a technique that simulated how light interacts with materials like ice and crystal.
The studio's breakthrough came with the 1998 short film Bunny, which demonstrated their ability to render complex textures like fur and metal. This success paved the way for their first feature, Ice Age, released in 2002. The film was a critical and commercial triumph, establishing Blue Sky as a major player alongside Pixar and DreamWorks. Over the next two decades, the studio produced thirteen feature films, including Rio and The Peanuts Movie, while maintaining their mascot, the acorn-obsessed Scrat.
Following the Walt Disney Company's acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019, Blue Sky was integrated into Disney’s animation units. However, the studio's tenure under Disney was short-lived. Citing the economic climate, Disney closed Blue Sky on April 10, 2021. The final project, a short clip of Scrat finally eating his acorn, was created by a small team of artists as a private farewell. While the studio's library and intellectual properties were absorbed by 20th Century Animation, the closure marked the end of an era for the pioneers who once used nuclear physics to bring talking coffee beans and prehistoric mammals to life.
