Before he was a cinematic icon, Bud Spencer was an Olympic-level athlete
In short: Born Carlo Pedersoli, the man known as Bud Spencer lived a life of extraordinary variety. Long before he became a beloved action-comedy star, he was a record-breaking swimmer, a lawyer, a commercial pilot, and a songwriter. His journey from the pool to the silver screen remains a unique cultural phenomenon.
Born in Naples in 1929, Carlo Pedersoli was a formidable athlete. He was the first Italian to swim the 100-meter freestyle in under one minute, a feat he achieved in 1950. His prowess extended to water polo, where he won the Italian Championship in 1954 and a gold medal at the 1955 Mediterranean Games. He represented Italy at the Summer Olympics in both 1952 and 1956, reaching the semi-finals in the 100-meter freestyle on both occasions.
His transition to film began in the 1950s, but his career truly transformed in 1967 when director Giuseppe Colizzi cast him in the Western God Forgives... I Don't!. It was here he met Mario Girotti, later known as Terence Hill. To suit the Western genre, Pedersoli adopted the stage name Bud Spencer, combining his love for Budweiser beer with his admiration for actor Spencer Tracy. The duo went on to star in 18 films together, creating a distinct brand of action-comedy that found massive success across Europe, Asia, and South America.
Beyond his acting, Spencer was a man of many trades. He held a law degree, registered several patents, and founded the air-mail company Mistral Air in 1984. He was also a certified commercial airline and helicopter pilot. Even in his later years, he remained a public figure, entering politics in 2005 and publishing his autobiography in 2011. When he passed away in 2016 at age 86, he left behind a legacy that transcended cinema, evidenced by statues erected in his honor in Budapest and Livorno, and a museum dedicated to his life in Berlin.
