A sanctuary for biodiversity hidden behind a 400,000-square-foot facade
In short: While visitors marvel at the lush rainforests and vibrant aquariums of the California Academy of Sciences, half of the structure remains hidden from public view. Beyond the glass domes and public galleries lies a massive, high-functioning research engine dedicated to the study of global biodiversity and the preservation of our natural world.
Founded in 1853 as a learned society, the California Academy of Sciences is the oldest operating natural history museum in the Western United States. It houses a staggering collection of over 46 million specimens, including one of the largest insect collections in the country with 7.5 million mounted specimens. The institution operates as a dual-purpose entity: it is both a public-facing museum and a rigorous research institute known as the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability (IBSS).
The scale of the operation is immense. While the public experiences the 'front of house'—which includes a 90-foot glass-domed rainforest, a planetarium with a unique star projector, and the Steinhart Aquarium—nearly 50% of the physical structure is dedicated to research and administrative facilities. These 'behind the scenes' areas host scientists conducting systematic studies in fields ranging from marine biology and botany to paleontology and entomology. This infrastructure supports the publication of peer-reviewed research and the management of a library containing over 230,000 volumes.
The 2008 reconstruction by architect Renzo Piano integrated these dual missions into a sustainable masterpiece. The building was constructed using 11 million pounds of recycled steel and 20,000 cubic yards of recycled concrete, earning it a LEED Platinum certification. This design ensures that the institution can continue its mission of 'systematic and conservation research' while providing a modern, environmentally conscious space for public education and community outreach.
