How an introverted child used education as a personal refuge
In short: From a child actress debuting at age six to a dual-degree Stanford alumna, Maudy Ayunda has navigated a high-profile career in Indonesia. Yet, behind the fame lies a profound commitment to education, which she describes not just as a pursuit, but as a vital space of personal control.
Born in Jakarta in 1994, Maudy Ayunda’s journey began in the spotlight with her 2005 film debut in 'Untuk Rena'. While her career spans music, entrepreneurship, and acting, her foundational identity is rooted in academia. As a child, she was often found reading quietly during family gatherings, viewing education as a 'safe space' where she could maintain full accountability for her own successes and failures. This early intellectual curiosity was evident as she learned to read at age three, using a household newspaper called Kompas as her first word.
Her academic path was marked by significant transitions and high achievements. After facing early challenges with English proficiency at Mentari Intercultural School, she eventually attended the British School Jakarta. After a 2011 secondary school completion and a subsequent break, she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University, finishing with honours comparable to Magna Cum Laude. In 2019, she transitioned to the United States, earning a dual master's degree in business administration (MBA) and education from Stanford University. Her academic journey also included a gap year after being accepted to Columbia University. She later achieved significant recognition, including a place on the Forbes Asia 30 Under 30 list.
Beyond her personal studies, Ayunda uses her platform for social advocacy. She established a Mentorship & Scholarship Program in 2018 to empower Indonesian youth, providing workshops on topics like mental resilience and productivity. Her influence extends to global diplomacy, having served as the Spokesperson for the G20 Indonesia Presidency in 2022. Whether through her skincare venture, From This Island, or her musical storytelling, her work continues to focus on themes of empowerment and social impact. Her entrepreneurial efforts include the launch of From This Island, a personal care brand utilizing Indonesian superfoods. Additionally, she has authored several books, including a collection of stories published when she was eleven.
