The Dallas Mavericks share a name with a 1950s TV western, not a basketball legacy.
In short: While the Dallas Mavericks are now a powerhouse of the NBA, their name was chosen by fans from a list of options in 1980. The moniker was inspired by a television show, and the team's history has been marked by dramatic rebuilds, legendary players, and constant evolution since their inaugural season.
The Dallas Mavericks were established as an expansion team in 1980, following a period of negotiation led by Norm Sonju and Don Carter. The team's name was selected by fans who submitted 4,600 postcards, choosing 'Mavericks' over 'Wranglers' and 'Express' to honor the 1957–1962 television western. James Garner, the star of that series, was even part of the original ownership group. The franchise began its journey at Reunion Arena, where they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 103–92 in their debut game.
The team's trajectory has been defined by distinct eras of struggle and success. After a promising start in the 1980s led by players like Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman, the franchise faced significant challenges, including the loss of Roy Tarpley to a lifetime ban in 1991. The 1990s were characterized by rebuilding efforts, including the 'Three Js' era featuring Jason Kidd, Jim Jackson, and Jamal Mashburn. The arrival of Dirk Nowitzki in 1998 marked the beginning of the franchise's most successful period, culminating in their only NBA championship in 2011.
The Mavericks' history is also a story of constant personnel shifts. In the 1996–97 season alone, 27 different players saw action, setting an NBA record. More recently, the team saw a resurgence with Luka Dončić, reaching the Western Conference finals in 2022 and the NBA Finals in 2024. By February 2025, the team's roster underwent another major transformation when they traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, continuing the franchise's tradition of bold, sometimes surprising, strategic maneuvers.
