Before he reshaped American cities, Daniel Burnham failed at almost everything he tried.
In short: Daniel Burnham is remembered as a titan of urban planning and the father of the skyscraper. Yet, before his architectural rise, he failed at mining, politics, and multiple sales jobs. His eventual success relied on a unique partnership with John Wellborn Root, blending bold business vision with structural genius.
Born in 1846, Burnham was raised in the Swedenborgian faith, which emphasized service to others. Despite his later fame, his early path was erratic. He failed entrance exams for Harvard and Yale due to severe test anxiety and struggled to settle into a career, drifting through various roles including mining in Nevada and running for the state senate. It was not until he joined the firm of Carter, Drake & Wight in 1872 that he found his calling, meeting the talented architect John Wellborn Root.
The partnership of Burnham & Root became legendary for its complementary strengths. While Root possessed a brilliant eye for design and structural totality, Burnham excelled at managing business operations, impressing clients, and overseeing construction. Their firm was instrumental in the birth of the skyscraper, notably with the 10-story Montauk Block (1882–83). To overcome Chicago’s unstable soil, they pioneered a 'floating foundation' of concrete and iron rails, effectively creating artificial bedrock. They also introduced innovations like winter construction using heated, tented sites and advanced fireproofing systems.
Over their 18-year collaboration, the pair completed nearly 300 structures, ranging from office buildings to warehouses. Burnham’s influence extended far beyond individual buildings; he became a master of urban planning, famously managing the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and later developing the 1909 Plan of Chicago. By organizing his office for maximum efficiency and fostering a supportive, human-centric work environment, Burnham established a model for the modern architectural firm, cementing his legacy as a transformative force in the American landscape.
