From San Diego expansion to Houston dynasty: the Rockets' turbulent journey
In short: Born in 1967 as a San Diego expansion team, the Rockets faced financial ruin and relocation. Yet, through legendary draft picks and strategic trades, they transformed from a struggling franchise into a two-time NBA champion and a pioneer of advanced analytics.
The franchise began in 1967 when Robert Breitbard paid $1.75 million to establish the San Diego Rockets. The name honored San Diego's connection to the Atlas missile program. However, the early years were defined by struggle; the team won only 15 games in their debut season and set an NBA record for losses with 67 wins in their inaugural year. Financial pressures, including tax issues at the San Diego Sports Arena, eventually forced Breitbard to sell the team in June 1971 to a Houston-based group for $5.6 million.
The move to Texas in 1971 marked a turning point. While the team initially struggled with coaching changes and trades, the 1980s ushered in an era of unprecedented dominance. The drafting of Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984, paired with 7-foot-4-inch Ralph Sampson, created the famous 'Twin Towers' front court. This era reached its zenith in the mid-1990s under coach Rudy Tomjanovich. In the 1993–94 season, the Rockets set a franchise record with 58 wins, eventually defeating the New York Knicks to secure their first NBA championship, followed by a repeat victory over the Orlando Magic the next year.
The Rockets' identity has always been shaped by star power and innovation. The franchise has seen four MVP awards from players like Moses Malone, H。《Hakeem Olajuwon, and James Harden. Beyond on-court talent, the organization became famous under general manager Daryl Morey for popularizing advanced statistical analytics to influence player acquisitions and strategy. Despite periods of rebuilding following the departures of legends like Olajuwon and the retirement of Yao Ming, the Rockets remain a cornerstone of NBA history.
