How a wisecracking weatherman redefined the American late-night talk show for three decades
In short: Before he became a television icon, David Letterman was an unconventional weatherman in Indianapolis known for predicting hail the size of canned hams. His irreverent style eventually transformed the late-night landscape, turning talk shows into platforms for irony, nonsensical skits, and a new, abrasive form of celebrity interaction.
Born in 1947 in Indianapolis, David Letterman began his broadcasting career as a local weatherman and radio host. His early work was defined by a penchant for the absurd, such as congratulating tropical storms on their upgrades or reporting weather for fictitious cities. After moving to Los Angeles in 1975, he honed his stand-up skills at the Comedy Store before gaining national exposure as a guest host for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.
Letterman’s breakthrough came in 1982 with NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman. The show rejected traditional talk-show conventions, favoring ironic humor, segments like 'Stupid Pet Tricks,' and a confrontational rapport with guests. While his 1993 move to CBS to host the Late Show initially faced skepticism regarding his appeal to a mainstream audience, he successfully challenged the long-standing dominance of The Tonight Show. Over his career, he hosted 6,080 episodes, setting a record for the longest tenure in American late-night history.
Beyond his on-air persona, Letterman was a significant producer through his company, Worldwide Pants, which backed hits like the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Despite health challenges, including emergency quintuple heart bypass surgery in 2000, he remained a fixture of television until his retirement in 2015. His influence persists through the many hosts who followed him, and he continues to work in television, hosting the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction since 2018.
