From Little Britain to literary titan, the complex rise and fall of David Walliams
In short: David Walliams transformed from a sketch comedy provocateur into one of the UK's most successful children's authors, selling over 50 million books. Yet, his career trajectory recently collapsed following internal investigations into his workplace conduct, leading to the termination of his publishing contract and the removal of his works from circulation.
Born David Edward Williams in 1971, the actor adopted his stage name to join Equity. He rose to fame through the BBC sketch series Little Britain, co-created with Matt Lucas, which ran from 2003 to 2006. Known for grotesque caricatures and transgressive humor, the duo became a cultural phenomenon, later starring in Come Fly with Me. Walliams also established himself as a television personality, serving as a judge on Britain's Got Talent from 2012 to 2022, earning multiple National Television Awards before his departure in 2022 following the leak of disparaging comments made to contestants.
In 2008, Walliams pivoted to children's literature with The Boy in the Dress. His books, often compared to the style of Roald Dahl, achieved massive commercial success, accounting for 44% of HarperCollins' children's title sales by 2018. By 2019, his literary output had generated £100 million in revenue. However, his work faced increasing scrutiny. Critics, including activist Jack Monroe, accused his stories of harboring racism and classism. In 2021, HarperCollins agreed to remove a story featuring a stereotypical Chinese character from The World's Worst Children following public complaints.
The final blow to his career came in 2025. Following a year-long internal investigation into allegations of harassment and inappropriate behavior toward junior female staff, HarperCollins terminated his contract. The fallout was severe: book sales plummeted by 60% that summer, and by 2026, the publisher confirmed it would no longer sell or reprint his older titles. Once celebrated for his charity work—including swimming the English Channel and the Thames—Walliams now faces a legacy defined as much by his professional disgrace as his previous literary dominance.
