The Miss Universe who punched her way to a crown
In short: Demi-Leigh Tebow is often remembered for her poise on the global stage, but her path to the Miss Universe title was forged in a moment of raw, physical survival. Before she was a global icon, she was a woman forced into a carjacked vehicle who chose to fight back.
Born in Sedgefield, South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters (now Tebow) rose to prominence as a model and advocate. Her journey to the Miss Universe 2017 title was marked by personal milestones, including graduating from North-West University in March 2017, just days before her victory in the Miss South Africa competition. While she represented the Western Cape, she was notably the second woman from South Africa to hold the international title, following Margaret Gardiner in 1978. However, her platform was deeply informed by personal adversity. A defining moment occurred just one month after she was crowned Miss South Africa: she was carjacked at Hyde Park. Although she initially surrendered her keys, the attackers forced her into the vehicle.
In a pivotal act of self-defense, she punched one of the carjackers in the throat and escaped. This experience directly shaped her advocacy, leading her to establish self-defense workshops for women during her reign. Beyond her physical bravery, Tebow has used her platform to address systemic issues, such as the gender pay gap, where women in some regions earn only 75% of what men earn for the same work. Her personal life has also been public; she married former professional athlete Tim Tebow in January 2020. Today, she continues her influence as an author, publishing works like 'A Crown that Lasts' and 'Princess Paris Finds Her Purpose,' focusing on faith and identity.
