How a Utah teenager moved to London and redefined modern competitive dance television
In short: Derek Hough is a record-breaking dancer who transformed from a childhood prodigy in London to a television powerhouse. With six wins on Dancing with the Stars and four Emmy Awards for choreography, he has shaped the landscape of televised dance, proving that technical mastery can thrive in mainstream entertainment.
Born in 1985 in Sandy, Utah, Derek Hough was sent to London at age 12 to train with coaches Corky and Shirley Ballas. This decade-long immersion at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts provided him with a rigorous foundation in jazz, ballet, tap, and gymnastics. Alongside his sister Julianne and friend Mark Ballas, he performed in a pop trio and gained early professional experience, eventually teaching at the same academy where he studied.
Hough’s competitive career began with major international titles, including the 2002 IDSF World Latin U-21 Championship and the 2003 Blackpool U-21 Latin title. His transition to television, specifically ABC's Dancing with the Stars, cemented his status as a premier choreographer. Between 2007 and 2016, he secured a record-breaking six victories with various celebrity partners. His influence extended beyond the ballroom, as he choreographed the historic routine that helped Meryl Davis and Charlie White win the first U.S. Olympic gold medal in ice dancing in 2014.
Beyond his competitive success, Hough has navigated a multifaceted career spanning Broadway, West End theater, and television judging. He earned four Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography, including a 2013 win for a collaborative number featuring Neil Patrick Harris. After serving as a judge on NBC's World of Dance from 2017 to 2020, he returned to Dancing with the Stars as a judge, eventually becoming the interim head judge by season 32. His work remains characterized by a commitment to blending technical precision with broad, human-centered storytelling.
