From Grimsby to the world stage: the competitive rise of Kevin Clifton
In short: Before he became a household name on British television, Kevin Clifton was a Youth World Number 1 Latin dancer. Raised in a family of champions, his path from a small Lincolnshire town to the heights of professional ballroom dancing reveals a career defined by relentless competition and constant reinvention.
Born in 1982, Kevin Clifton was immersed in dance from childhood in Waltham, Grimsby. Taught by his parents, Keith and Judy Clifton—both former World Champions—he initially partnered with his sister, Joanne. To avoid direct competition with her, he pivoted to Latin as his primary style, eventually securing the Youth World Number 1 ranking. By the time he retired from competitive dancing in 2007, he had claimed four British Latin Championship titles and 14 International Open victories across countries ranging from Japan to Slovenia, holding a world ranking of 7th.
Clifton’s transition to professional performance began with the dance show Burn the Floor, where he performed on Broadway and in London’s West End. His television career is most notable for his seven-year tenure on the BBC series Strictly Come Dancing, starting in 2013. He became a fixture of the show’s finals, achieving the unique distinction of being the first professional to compete in four consecutive series finales. He eventually won the sixteenth series in 2018 alongside journalist Stacey Dooley.
Beyond the ballroom, Clifton has maintained a diverse career in musical theatre, appearing in productions such as Rock of Ages, The War of the Worlds, and Chicago. His life outside of performance is equally varied; he is a patron of the Wheelchair DanceSport Association, a supporter of Scunthorpe United, and manages a property investment business. In 2023, he explored his ancestry on Who Do You Think You Are?, discovering he is a direct descendant of an Indigenous Canadian woman named Matooskie, further broadening the narrative of a performer who has consistently sought to move beyond his initial public persona.
