How Donatella Versace Transformed a Family Tragedy Into a Global Fashion Empire
In short: After her brother Gianni’s murder in 1997, Donatella Versace faced the daunting task of reinventing a luxury house defined by his singular vision. By blending high-end glamour with celebrity culture and expanding into hotels and global partnerships, she secured the brand’s future while forging her own distinct creative identity.
Born in 1955 in Reggio Calabria, Italy, Donatella Versace was initially expected to become a teacher. However, she frequently traveled to Milan to assist her brother Gianni, who valued her critique. When Gianni Versace SpA was founded in 1978, Donatella became vice president, acting as a creative hand and critic for nearly two decades. She also managed the Versus and Young Versace lines, establishing her own professional footing long before she took the helm.
The turning point arrived on July 15, 1997, when Gianni was murdered in Miami Beach. Following a period of mourning, Donatella assumed the roles of chief designer and vice president. Her primary challenge was to move beyond her brother’s inspirations to create a look that was uniquely her own. She succeeded by aggressively leveraging celebrity culture, featuring icons like Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga in campaigns, and producing iconic moments like the 2000 Grammy Awards dress worn by Jennifer Lopez.
Beyond apparel, Donatella expanded the brand’s reach into luxury real estate, overseeing the opening of the Palazzo Versace in Australia in 2000 and the Dubai location in 2015. She navigated complex corporate shifts, including the 2018 acquisition of the business by Michael Kors Holdings Ltd. (later Capri Holdings) for approximately $2 billion. Throughout these transitions, she maintained leadership of the brand’s creative vision until announcing her departure from the creative director role in March 2025.
Donatella’s tenure was marked by both professional triumph and personal struggle, including a well-documented battle with cocaine addiction that led to treatment in 2004. By the time she stepped down in 2025 to become chief brand ambassador, she had successfully evolved the company from a family-run house into a global powerhouse, proving her ability to sustain the Versace legacy while adapting to the demands of a modern, celebrity-driven market.
