The Grand Egyptian Museum is the world's largest home for a single civilization
In short: Located just two kilometres from the iconic Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum stands as a monumental achievement in archaeology. Spanning 500,000 square metres, this massive institution houses over 100,000 artifacts, including the complete King Tutankhamun collection, finally bringing thousands of previously unseen historical treasures to the public eye.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, or GEM, represents a colossal undertaking dedicated to the entirety of Ancient Egyptian history. Its vast collection spans from the Predynastic Period through to the era of Roman Egypt. Among its most significant features is the dedicated space for the King Tutankhamun collection, which consists of 5,398 individual pieces displayed across a 7,500 square metre gallery. This is the first time this entire collection has been showcased in such a comprehensive manner.
Beyond the famous boy king, the museum serves as a repository for newly restored artifacts that have rarely, if ever, been seen by the public. These include the second solar ship of Khufu, the collection belonging to Queen Hetepheres, and the artifacts of Yuya and Thuya. The facility itself is an architectural feat, featuring a total floor area of 81,000 square metres, with an additional 32,000 square metres allocated for permanent, temporary, and special exhibition galleries, as well as a children's museum and immersive virtual displays.
The journey to completion was a multi-decade project. First announced in 1992, the construction phase did not commence until 2005. A joint venture between the Egyptian firm Orascom Construction and the Belgian BESIX Group brought the vision to life. The project reached full completion in 2023, with a total investment of $1.2 billion. Following a trial period that began in October 2024, the museum held its official opening on 1 November 2025, solidifying its status as the premier destination for studying the culture and society of Ancient Egypt.
