How a teenage architectural drafting student became the architect of West Coast gangsta rap.
In short: Before he was a Hollywood star, O'Shea Jackson was a high school student in Los Angeles who learned architectural drafting as a backup plan. As Ice Cube, he used that same structural precision to build the sound of N.W.A and define the violent, controversial identity of West Coast hip-hop.
Born in Los Angeles in 1969, O'Shea Jackson began writing raps in ninth grade after a classroom challenge. By 1987, he had co-founded N.W.A with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre. As the group's lead rapper and primary ghostwriter, he penned the majority of the lyrics for their 1989 landmark album, Straight Outta Compton. This record was instrumental in establishing gangsta rap's popularity and creating a distinct West Coast identity, separating it from the East Coast scene.
The trajectory of his career shifted following a financial dispute over the group's management by Jerry Heller. After leaving N.W.A in late 1989, Ice Cube embarked on a successful solo career, releasing politically charged albums like AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted and Death Certificate. These works were critically acclaimed but often controversial, drawing accusations of misogyny and racism. His 1992 album, The Predator, made history as the first to debut at number one on both the pop and R&B/hip-hop charts, selling over three million copies in the United States.
Beyond music, Ice Cube transitioned into a prolific film career, beginning with his role in the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood. He later co-wrote and starred in the 1995 comedy Friday, which launched a successful franchise and fundamentally reshaped his public image. Throughout the following decades, he balanced music—including the formation of the supergroup Westside Connection—with acting and producing credits, such as the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton. Despite his diverse portfolio, he remained a consistent presence in the industry, even returning to his roots by collaborating with former N.W.A members in later years.
