How a failed rock musician became the most iconic face of professional wrestling
In short: Before he was the face of Hulkamania, Terry Gene Bollea was a college dropout playing bass in Florida bars. A chance discovery by wrestling scouts transformed him into a global phenomenon, sparking a sports entertainment boom that redefined the industry and turned a handlebar-mustached giant into a household name.
Born in 1953, Terry Gene Bollea initially pursued a career in music, performing with the band Ruckus in Florida. His path shifted in 1976 when the Brisco Brothers discovered him at a gig, leading to his training under Hiro Matsuda. By 1977, he debuted as the Super Destroyer, eventually adopting the Hulk Hogan persona upon joining the WWF in 1979.
Hogan’s career was defined by his massive 6-foot-7 frame and his role in the 1980s wrestling explosion. After a brief stint in movies like Rocky III, he returned to the WWF in 1983 under Vince McMahon, Jr., who pivoted toward child-friendly, theatrical storylines. Hogan’s victory over the Iron Sheik in 1984 cemented his status as the face of the sport, a reign that lasted until 1988.
The 1990s brought significant shifts, including Hogan's move to World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1994. In 1996, he shocked fans by turning into the villainous Hollywood Hogan, forming the New World Order. His later years were marked by a high-profile 2016 legal battle against Gawker, financed by Peter Thiel, which resulted in a $31 million settlement after an initial $140 million jury award.
Hogan’s legacy remains complex, spanning his 2024 support for Donald Trump, his 2015 termination from the WWE following leaked audio containing racial slurs, and his eventual return to the company. He passed away in July 2025 in Clearwater, Florida, leaving behind a career that bridged the gap between traditional wrestling and modern pop-culture celebrity.
