In short: After visiting museums in Paris, London, and Vienna in 1867, Sultan Abdülaziz ordered the creation of an imperial collection in Istanbul. What began as a storage space for artifacts in a church evolved into a world-class institution housing over one million objects, including the world's oldest known peace treaty.

The origins of the Istanbul Archaeology Museums trace back to the Hagia Irene Church, which served as an armory for Janissaries before becoming a repository for imperial artifacts. Following the Sultan's 1867 European tour, the site was officially inaugurated as the Imperial Museum in 1869. This decree marked a pivotal shift in how the Ottoman state managed its heritage, moving away from traditional legal frameworks toward a structured system of excavation permits and artifact conservation.

Osman Hamdi Bey, an accomplished artist and archaeologist, became the museum's first curator in 1881. Recognizing that the growing collection required a dedicated space, he commissioned the main building, which opened in 1891. Designed by architect Alexander Vallaury, the structure is a neoclassical landmark whose facade was inspired by the museum's own prized Alexander Sarcophagus. The institution expanded further with the inclusion of the Tiled Kiosk, a 1472 pleasure palace, and the Museum of the Ancient Orient, which houses vast collections from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Anatolia.

Today, the museum complex holds treasures ranging from 800,000 Ottoman coins to the 1258 BCE peace treaty between Ramesses II and Hattusili III. Its significance was recognized globally in 1991 when the Council of Europe honored the institution with a prestigious award for its extensive renovations and modern display techniques. By bridging ancient history with 19th-century imperial ambition, the museum remains a vital custodian of world civilizations.
