In short: Jeffrey Katzenberg transformed the Walt Disney Company from a struggling studio into a multibillion-dollar powerhouse before co-founding DreamWorks. His career, defined by ruthless cost-cutting and a keen eye for animation, spans the creation of legendary films and high-stakes corporate battles that reshaped the modern entertainment landscape for decades.

Katzenberg began his ascent in the mailroom at Paramount Pictures, eventually becoming a protégé of Michael Eisner. When Eisner moved to lead Disney in 1984, he brought Katzenberg along as a junior partner. Together with Frank Wells, they revitalized the company, growing its value from $2 billion to $22 billion over a decade. Katzenberg took direct control of the animation division, where he oversaw a string of massive commercial and critical successes that restored Disney’s status as a premier storyteller.

Despite his achievements, internal friction grew. Following the accidental death of Frank Wells in 1994, Katzenberg expected a promotion to president, but Eisner refused. This led to his resignation and the immediate founding of DreamWorks SKG alongside Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. The new studio quickly established itself by producing Academy Award-winning films and launching blockbuster animated franchises that challenged Disney's dominance in the market.

Katzenberg’s later career saw him spin off DreamWorks Animation into a separate entity, which he eventually sold to NBCUniversal for $3.8 billion in 2016. He later pivoted to technology with the launch of Quibi, a short-form mobile video platform that shut down within months of its 2020 debut. Throughout his career, Katzenberg has remained a polarizing figure, praised for his business acumen and humanitarian efforts, such as receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2012, yet often criticized for the intense ego and internal conflicts that defined his tenure at major studios.
