How one Broadway star achieved a perfect streak of Tony Award nominations
In short: From her 2005 debut in The Light in the Piazza, Kelli O'Hara has maintained an extraordinary run on Broadway. Since that first nomination, she has been recognized by the Tony Awards for every single subsequent role she has played on the Broadway stage.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kelli O'Hara has transitioned from a promising ingénue to one of the most decorated leading ladies in musical theatre. After studying vocal performance and opera at Oklahoma City University, she rose to prominence through a series of critically acclaimed performances. Her 2005 appearance in The Light in the Piazza earned her a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress, a milestone that began a remarkable period of consistency: she has since received a Tony nomination for every Broadway role she has undertaken.
Her repertoire spans both musical theatre and grand opera. The 2015 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical was hers, following her performance as Anna Leonowens in The King and I. Beyond Broadway, O'Hara has made significant marks at The Metropolitan Opera, debuting in 2014 as Valencienne Zeta in The Merry Widow and later appearing in productions of Così fan tutte and The Hours. The latter production saw her performing alongside opera legends Renée Fleming and Joyce DiDonato.
O'Hara's versatility extends into television and web drama, where she has avoided being confined to a single medium. Her television credits feature appearances in The Gilded Age, 13 Reasons Why, and Masters of Sex. In 2018, she earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her performance in the web drama series The Accidental Wolf. This ability to navigate between the operatic stage, Broadway revivals, and screen drama has defined her career as a multifaceted performer.
