Kelly Preston: From Hawaiian Childhood to Hollywood Stardom and a Private Life of Resilience
In short: Born Kelly Kamalelehua Smith in Honolulu, the actress built a prolific career spanning over 60 film and television roles. Beyond her high-profile marriage to John Travolta and iconic performances in films like Jerry Maguire, her life was marked by both professional versatility and profound personal challenges kept largely out of sight.
Kelly Preston, born in 1962, navigated a global upbringing that took her from Hawaii to Iraq and Australia. Discovered by a photographer at age 16, she adopted the name Preston while pursuing acting. Her breakthrough arrived in 1985 with roles in Mischief and Secret Admirer, launching a career that included memorable appearances in Twins, Jerry Maguire, and Sky High. She was also a recognizable face as a spokesperson for Neutrogena and appeared in the popular Maroon 5 music video for "She Will Be Loved."
Her personal life was frequently in the public eye, particularly her 1991 marriage to John Travolta. The couple wed twice—first in Paris and then in Florida—to satisfy requirements of their shared faith, Scientology. They had three children together: Jett, Ella Bleu, and Benjamin. The family faced a devastating tragedy in 2009 when their eldest son, Jett, died at age 16 following a seizure while they were vacationing in the Bahamas. The aftermath involved a complex legal battle, as the family became the target of a multimillion-dollar extortion plot related to the circumstances of Jett's passing.
Preston maintained a private approach to her health, a trait that extended to her final years. In 2020, she passed away at age 57 after a two-year battle with breast cancer, a diagnosis she had not widely publicized. Her career concluded with her final film role in the 2021 comedy-drama Off the Rails. Throughout her life, from her early days as a model in Australia to her final red carpet appearance for the film Gotti in 2018, Preston remained a dedicated performer, balancing the demands of fame with the quiet endurance of personal loss.
