In short: Yaragudipati Venkata Mahalakshmi, known simply as Lakshmi, is a rare titan of Indian cinema. Over a career spanning five decades and 650 films, she mastered four distinct languages, consistently dubbing her own dialogue. From her 1968 debut to becoming a celebrated character actress, her versatility remains unmatched in the industry.

Born in Chennai to actress Kumari Rukmini and filmmaker Yaragudipati Varada Rao, Lakshmi entered the film world in 1968 with the Kannada movie Goa Dalli CID 999. She quickly established herself as a powerhouse across South India, acting in Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu cinema. Her breakthrough came with the 1974 Malayalam film Chattakari, a blockbuster that ran for 40 weeks in a single Bangalore theatre. This success led to a Hindi remake, Julie (1975), which introduced her to a national audience and earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Lakshmi’s career is defined by an extraordinary range. She is the only actress to have won Filmfare Awards for Best Actress across both South Indian languages and Hindi. Her accolades include a National Film Award for Best Actress for the 1977 Tamil film Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal, making her one of the first South Indian actresses to achieve this for a Tamil production. Beyond her leading roles, she became a beloved character actress, portraying grandmothers in major hits like the 1998 film Jeans and the 2004 film Hulchul.

Her influence extends well beyond the screen. She has hosted multiple talk shows, including Achamillai, Achamillai and Kadhai Alla Nijam, and served as a judge on reality programs like Drama Juniors. Her personal life has been as public as her career, including three marriages and the adoption of her daughter, Samyuktha, in 2000. In 2017, she received the Dr. Rajkumar Award, the highest honor in the Kannada film industry, cementing her legacy as one of the most versatile and enduring stars in Indian cinematic history.
